Running the simulation from within the IDE allows for more rapid development of Gatling simulations. Gatling need to compile the simulation before being able to run it and the easiest way to accomplish this seems to me to use the Gatling Maven plug-in. Using Maven enables me to easily run a selected Gatling simulation from within the IDE.In particular, I wanted to avoid the use of sbt. Since this is part of an introduction of Gatling for Java developers, I want to minimize the number of unfamiliar events.

I have tried the Scala IDE and while it is much easier to get Scala and Maven to play nice together, the code completion feature were not as good.

IntelliJ IDEA has good Scala code completion.

The following are my motivations for using Maven in connection to Scala and to create a project in the IntelliJ IDEA:

In the first step a Scala project that uses Maven for dependency management will be created and in the second step I will adapt the project to developing and running Gatling simulations. The project will use Maven for dependency management and to run a selected Gatling simulation.

Now when you build your project ( Ctrl+F9), the build is run in the sbt shell. In the sbt shell section, select the builds option. In the sbt projects section, select a project for which you want to configure build actions. Press Ctrl+Alt+S to open the IDE settings and select Build, Execution, Deployment | Build Tools | sbt. The build is executed through the sbt shell where you can view the output. In this case, such steps as compilation and source generation are run within sbt, making the process closer to the actual CI build. You can delegate a build of your project to sbt. You can switch to Phases or Units to see the different level of details in compilation process. You can use the Level list to see how those are processed during the compilation. The compiler work is done in phases, and a phase may contain many units (source files). Build Scala projectДЇrom the main menu, select Build | Build Project ( Ctrl+F9).Д¬heck the output and the chart in the Build tool window ( Build Output tab). Besides the regular compilation output, IntelliJВ IDEA displays a chart which can help you optimize the structure of your project modules and the VM options of the Scala Compile Server. The output of the compilation is displayed in the Build tool window. When you build( Ctrl+F9) a Scala project, the compilation is done with the Scala server. On the Scala Compile Server page, you can configure the parallel compilation options and the JVM settings. Select Scala Compile Server under Scala Compiler to configure the Scala Compile Server. For example, compile first Scala code and then Java code. You can also select the compilation order in which code should be compiled. On the Scala Compiler page, you can choose the incremental compiler such as Zinc, which a standalone version of the incremental compiler or the IntelliJВ IDEA native one.
